Life as a Foster Carer in Bury

30.05.25 | 3 minute read

Several Foster Carers in Bury share their day-today life experiences of being a foster carer, and the support they receive from Bury Council.

Bury Council is one of the 10 Greater Manchester local authorities working in collaboration to grow the number of foster carers to provide safe and loving homes for children and young people.

Samah and Quasim
The couple, who have their own children, have been fostering for since 2017. They transferred from a independent fostering agency to Bury Council in 2024 as they wanted to care and support children from their local community.

Andrea
Andrea has been a foster carer with Bury Council since 2021 and has experience of caring for younger children and supporting children moving onto adoption.

Rosie
Rosie works full-time and is a single foster carer. She initially came into fostering as a short-break (respite) carer, to to combine fostering alongside working full time.  Rosie now cares for a child who needed long-term care. As Rosie’s employer is a 'Foster friendly employer' this enabled Rosie to manage her foster care responsibilities alongside her work commitments.

Louise and Paul
Louise and Paul have been foster carers since 2024 offering short-break (respite) care to children and fostering families; this enables them to manage their existing work commitments around fostering.

Nicola
Nicola is Mockingbird home hub carer for one of the constellations at Bury Council. The main objective of the Mockingbird programme is to deliver sustainable foster care by replicating the extended family model offering support and relationships. They help nurture the relationships between children, young people and foster families, supporting them to build a resilient and caring community.

Nicola provides practical and emotional support and guidance to other foster carers within her group, alongside social activities and sleepovers to strengthen relationships and permanence.
