Starting the process of becoming a foster carer is a big decision and you may have already heard stories about the assessment process and the in-depth and at times uncomfortable conversations that need to be had. The application process is a key part of your journey to becoming a foster carer and understanding you as a whole person helps us to guide you through each step and make it easier for you in the long run.
Although fostering services would love to approve all families, the application process is a pivotal step to becoming a foster carer. This assessment process is personal and intimate, it is intended to learn who you are as a whole person including background checks and an in-depth look at your health, finances and personal history.
Why does the foster care application process require such thorough attention to detail?
Most prospective foster carers understand that the application process is a vital part of their journey and that approved foster carers need to have the necessary qualities and insights to offer excellent care before they can be entrusted with some of society’s most vulnerable children and young people.
What many find most uncomfortable are the personal conversations with their designated social worker, who will visit you at home several times. These conversations need to be open and honest. Nothing is off the table: childhood, sexuality, race, relationships with siblings and parents, health. For some, it is a rare and welcome opportunity to reflect in depth on what made us the adults we have become. But for others, the process can reopen old wounds. Our experienced and compassionate team will help to guide you through this process and support you through difficult conversations.
