What are supported lodgings in fostering?

Supported lodgings is an accommodation scheme for young people who need a secure and supportive environment in which to stay. They generally have a greater degree of independence than in mainstream fostering.

Who is it for?

The scheme is open to young people aged 16-21 (or 24 if they are in higher education). This includes care leavers or someone who is unable to live at home. The scheme is also open to young people from overseas who are claiming asylum.

Why is it needed?

It is needed for young people who may not be ready to live independently. They benefit from the kind of support that is available to other young people from parents or their extended families.

Why do it?

Carers will play an important role in helping young people develop their skills in cooking, washing, completing job applications and preparing for adult life. Young people will also need emotional support and encouragement to help them into adulthood meet their potential.
